For those of you who don't follow Colorado politics, he is the Congressman from Colorado's 6th district. He has extremist views on any number of subjects but today's really floored me.

Talking on the campaign trail (Yes my friends he's running for President. Yes of the United States.) He recently asserted that if we are attacked again, we should bomb Mecca and Medina- the two holiest sites in Islam.

While I think he means if we're attacked by muslim extremists, he didn't say specifically in the audio file I heard or the transcript I read. So, if we're attacked- by whoever- we should retaliate by attacking these two sites which happen to be in Saudi Arabia. An ally. An ally with oil. And yes I use the term ally to mean a politically expedient ally, not a morally desirably one.

Congressman Tancredo is quoted as follows:

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina," Tancredo said. "That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do. If I am wrong, fine, tell me, and I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent, or you will find an attack." [Emphasis added]
-Tom Tancredo July 31st 2007 IowaPolitics.com (1)

This brings me to the point of this Blog- Congressman, If you aren't smart enough to think of at least one other response, you really shouldn't be looking to lead the free world. In fact the people of the Colorado's 6th would do well to initiate a recall immediately.

Is Congressman Tancredo suggesting that the next time a Catholic is involved in an attack such as McVeigh(2) and Oklahoma City we should should bomb. . .what? Congressman Tancredo, help me out here.

Furthermore, attacking Saudi Arabia would most certainly galvanize the Middle East against the West. A large part of the reason that so many Middle Eastern nations joined with us in the first Coalition was because of Saddam Hussain's unilateral attack against Kuwait. Attacking a fellow Muslim nation was sin enough for the entire region to turn their back on the Iraqi madman. Imagine what they'd do if our assertedly Christian country were to bomb that which is sacred to 1.3 billion people. (Thats the world wide population of Muslims in case you didn't know)

Speaking of smart enough: I am amazed on a broader level that the Bush administration thinks they have to throw out the Bill of Rights to win against these goons. Are we finally announcing to the world that we aren't smart enough to win by our own rules?

Call your representatives and ask for a censure of Congressman Tancredo's call for an a attack on Mecca and Medina. If you live in Colorado's 6th, start recall proceding against this small minded bigot.

Think about it.

Sources:
(1) http://www.iowapolitics.com/index.iml?Article=101389
President Clinton has not held power for 6 years, was how could it be possible that it's his fault?

R: He had sex with that Intern. Immoral. Kim Jong Il Immoral. Have to protect the kids. Terrorists everywhere- evildoers.

I: But sir, President Clinton had brought the situation on the Korean Peninsula there to a point where we were going to purchase all of the medium and long range missles. A deal cancelled by the current aministration. Unification was being discussed as of 1998.

R: We’d lose to a dictatorship! Evildoers!

I: Well historically we’ve seen that the unification under such conditions results in a democracy- Germany is a good example.

R Have to fight the terrorists. Better there than here.

I: Back to the original question- how can this be seen as his fault when you’ve had control for over six years now?

R: He didn’t use six party talks, talked right to the evildoers. That counts as a second question.

I: Six party talks haven’t worked.

R: It’s for the kids.

I: Well, on the subject of kids, and the issue of Republican control of the national agenda. In the last six years, the Republican party has not brought much in the way of substantial legislation to outlaw abortion. They do however, continue to assail the Democratic party for defending a woman’s right to decide. . .

R: Axis of Evil.

I: I was referring to domestic policy now Sir. For a party that has made historical and sweeping changes in the constitutional protections laid down in the Bill of Rights you’ve made practically no progress on the abortion issue which Justice Scalia contends has no standing at all in the constitution. The abortion issue is central to Republican success in mobilizing Christian Conservatives. With the exception of a few attempts at limited legislation, no substantial ban on abortion has come or appears to be coming. Could it be that the Republicans want to keep this issue open to win elections?

R: Democrats, liberal media, boogeyman.

I: Sir, I don’t understand your answer. Are the Republicans deliberately trying to keep the issue open to inflame the Christian right.

R: All of our rights are based on Christian teachings.

I: Ok, perhaps we should return to the question of Iraqi policy. Your pretext for military invasion of Iraq was possession of weapons of mass destruction and a willingness to use them.

R: Evildoers. Axis of Evil. Slam Dunk.

I: Sir, CIA Director Tenant has no clear recollection of ever saying the WMD was a slam dunk. To continue my question: Korea has clearly demonstrated that they have WMD and the rockets to deliver them, Iran is actively developing them and both have said that they would definitely use them, how is this different?

R: Do I have to spell it out?

I: It would help Sir.

R: Four little letters

KR(Whispered): three

R: Three little letters

I: I see, O-I-L?

R: No no S-I-N. They’re sinful. That’s a third question.

I: Who is sinful?

R: Fourth question. Anyone who goes against God’s plan of dismantling the constitution! Every one of the faithful knows that in this Christian land, the constitution embraces God.

I: Sir, if you go to any law search engine and access the Constitution you’ll see that the word GOD doesn’t exist in the text. The only mention of religion comes in the Bill of Rights and that reinforces the separation of church and state. The only mention of God or a Creator is in the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson’s reference to "Natures God" was a Deist reference. The Pledge of Allegiance wasn't created until 1892 and did not have the "Under God" element added until 1954 by President Eisenhower.

R: Evildoers.

I: Sir, if we could get back to the question: how does Korea and Iran definitely fielding nuclear weapons differ from Iraq possibly having them?

R: Asked and answered. Bill Clinton. Terrorists. Monica Lewinski. Stay the course.

I: OK Sir. Moving on. Representatives have addressed the Foley scandal by suggesting that the Democrats should take polygraph tests to determine their involvement and Representative Shays has gone as far back as Chappaquiddick over 45 years ago to defend the Republican handling of the issue.

R: And?

I: Well shouldn’t the focus be on making sure that the current pages are safe and finding out who knew what, Republican or Democrat and seeing that a full measure of justice is meted out?

R: Sixth question.

I: And your answer?

R: Seventh question.

I: Sir you haven’t answered.

R: Eighth question.

I: Sir that wasn’t a question. We’re still on number five. Sir, shouldn’t we find out if children are being preyed on by other individuals currently serving? This would seem to be a failure on the part of a Republican leadership Reps Foley, Blount, Reynolds, Boehner, and Hastert at a minimum.

R: Military. Bill Clinton, don’t ask don’t tell. Clinton let Bin Ladin go, I saw it!

I: Well sir, that was an ABC movie that even ABC admits was not factual regarding President Clinton’s handling of the Bin Ladin issue. Richard Clark, who was hired by President Reagan, retained by the first President Bush and President Clinton as the Anti-terrorism “Czar” and finally fired in the current administration, states quite clearly in his book that Clinton made the effort to isolate and eliminate Bin Ladin while the entirety of the Washington establishment was seeking to destroy his presidency. President Clinton failed to eliminate him when he wasn’t the icon he is today. Our current efforts are in no way hampered like his were and have failed to find him and capture him after six years even. We outsourced his capture to others at Tora Bora and they let him escape. We have had free reign to torture and access any information desired and still we have been unable to capture or kill Bin Ladin.

R: Clinton let Bin Ladin go I saw it.

I: OK. If I can change the subject. I made a mention of outsourcing a moment ago. The tax cuts you champion benefit the upper classes, in fact the richest Americans, yet middle class Americans are made to feel that they benefit somehow. How can we continue to current tax policy when so many corporations with very healthy balance sheets continue to avoid paying any tax at all? Before Vice President Cheney took office, he moved 44 of Halliburton’s subsidiaries to the Caymans where Enron held 692 subsidiaries. Halliburton went from a tax bill in 1998 of 302 million to a rebate of 85 million in 1999.

R: 9-11.

I: Sir that’s not an answer to the question.

R: Got to keep America strong. I’m the stronginator. Tax cuts to the rich benefit the poor.

I: That was called voodoo economics in President Reagan’s day. It was debunked as a credible economic model. More so when you consider that much of the economic windfall of recent years has gone into moving operations overseas and created a loss of 4 million manufacturing jobs.

R: Created jobs, the reports say so.

I: Yes sir, minimum wage jobs, that replacing better paying manufacturing jobs. It's pretty difficult to get by on minimum wage. Take housing for exampple. The average cost of a house in an inexpensive part of the country, say Ohio, is 150,000 which is about 6% under the national average. The mortgage payment on such a house would be 1,000 per month, forgetting for a moment the property taxes and assessements.

For a minimum wage worker that would mean 48 hours per week PRETAX just to buy an average house in an under average market. Assuming minimum wage for 40 hours a week, a worker would take home 10,712 dollars a year, Assuming no vacations. From that 1,215.05 would be deducted in taxes and they would lose a further chunk to state and sales tax.

R: Get money from daddy or his friends.

I: I understand why you would see that as a good alternative, but sir, many elders in this country are having difficulty making ends meet. The recent Medicare changes and the increasing number of pension plans being allowed to default not to mention the corporate scandals such as Enron, World Comm, Global Crossing, Tyco, Adelphia, and others that left pensioners destitute.

R:

I: Sir?

R:

I: OK, you know something of oil don’t you Sir.

R: Mother’s Milk.

I: Yes Sir. Now we are almost completely reliant on foreign oil interests for our survival. . .

R: Drill in the Arctic!

I: Well sir, even if we did pumped every ounce of oil in the Arctic, in the gulf, off of California and on South Fork ranch, we still wouldn’t have enough oil to meet our needs despite the fact that a huge amount of our manufacturing has gone overseas.

R: You’re a tree hugger.

I: Well no sir, but wouldn’t energy independence be a critical element of national security in our current age?

R: Gas prices dropping.

I: Yes they are, just prior to an election, but if the Saudi Arabian monarchy were to find a new friend to keep it in power in a manner that supervened President Roosevelt’s agreement wouldn’t we be in trouble?

R: Not me. Born again and into an oil family both times! McCain wasn’t born into an oil family.

I: I’m glad you brought that up. Sir we are the first world power in modern times to openly deny the Geneva Conventions and embrace torture. . .

R: It’s not torture, its aggressive interrogation and rendition.

I: Sir most experts in the field and John McCain who was tortured himself all say it’s not effective.

R: Stay the course. Clinton is to blame. 9-11. How long were you going to cover for this guy?

Rep. John Shimkus, a Republican from Illinois, runs the page program and knew of it.

Rep. Rodney Alexander of Louisiana knew of it as well, the page worked in his office. The family contacted Representative Alexander about the situation. He says they didn't want it pursued.

Huh? They contacted him just to make sure that he didn’t do anything about it? Is it just me or does that sound a bit off? No pressure on the family of course: Congress is in play, a 16 year old MALE apparently solicited by a single male Republican in a secure seat. Hmmmmmm.

Great leadership by the party of Moral Majority by the way- allowing a 16 year old to be victimized so as not to make waves. I must be missing a page in my Bible.

Representative Nancy Pelosi had the audacity to suggest it be looked into and had her motion blocked by Rep Boehner. Representative Boehner then made his own motion which was much narrower in scope and focused only on Ex-Representative Foley.

To my mind this is akin to the scene in Schindler’s List when they line the prisoners up to find out who stole something. The bad guys shoot one of the prisoners to make the point that they weren't screwing around and when asked again (ironically given the analogy) a young man steps forward and says the dead man stole the item.

If Representative Boehner actually wants to address the situation properly, and unfettered investigation is the right course of action.

And about the full weight of the judicial system- if the Representatives were aware of potentially illegal activity involving a minor they and did not notify the authorities- they should be charged. But hey fellas look in the bright side, it’s not like they can throw you in jail without a lawyer for an indefinite period of time. Oh wait- it’s a lot like that.

Reps. Boehner, Foley, Alexander, Simpkus, Reynolds, Blunt, and (It kills me to say this because I had always thought he was an honourable man) Speaker Hastert should all resign right now and the legal system should evaluate each of their roles in the issue. Representative Pelosi’s motion should be brought back to the floor for consideration in the form of an expanded inquiry into Ex-Representative Foley’s activities.

In sum I think it’s time that we recognize that, what ever it had been in the past, the Republican Party has become a bastion of corrupt, immoral, hypocrites that good people voted in hoping they were on the level and would lead the country in a moral way.

Instead, these good people of America have been spoon fed deception in the form of homophobic, racist, anti-American legislation by frauds in Christian clothing to support an ill-advised war, neglect a necessary war, legislate torture and spend in an unbelievably reckless fashion. You think tax and spend is bad? How about borrow and spend? (What's in your wallet?)

As the Republican party continues to rack up impressive gains on the corruption meter, I expect to hear the old battle cry: "But Bill Clinton blah blah blah." Yes he did- 7 years ago.

If you can find a good person to vote for, one who genuinely has America's best interest at heart and not some political stooge, then do so regardless of party affiliation. The Republican party, however, has some house cleaning to do before they can remotely hope to look superior in any fashion.

If there a good person on the ballot, start a write in campaign now! It’s our democracy; let’s take it back from the pedophiles, the influence peddlers, the bribe takers, the liars and those who would cover for them.

Ya Gotta Have Friends

     The war on terror continues.

The intelligence community has handed over what could be a major victory in thwarting a plot to hijack some ten planes or so.

Bravo! I mean that. Outstanding work if it is what it claims to be. I stand re-affirmed in the knowledge that it’s a harsh world out there filled with those who would see us fail and that technological superiority met with superior information will overcome fanaticism.

What is missing from the current equation is this: Here in the states we have burned major sections of the constitution in an effort to illuminate darkened corners in the hopes that some pest will come scurrying out for us to kill. We’ve sat by while warrantless wiretaps have become accepted practice. People are held indefinitely with out trial and without counsel. We've watched while Attorney General Gonzales sits in front of a Senate panel and stands stymied over the definitition of torture. (And some still think this issue with the definition of "Is" remains the greatest sin) The list goes on.

But it wasn’t any of these that provided the victory today. It was the intelligence community doing what it does best.

WITHOUT SUSPENDING THE

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS

OF ITS CITIZENS

Of note here is that it wasn’t our intelligence community, it was the British.

Now I am not going to say that our intelligence community failed because we didn’t find these guys first because it sounds like a reasonable case that the British were the ones who SHOULD have found it. I’d even venture to say our guys probably helped somewhere along the line.

      BUT

It does demonstrate the absolute need for friends in the world.

About 230 years ago we were killing each other- the British and the Americans during the Revolution I mean. Then, During the War of 1812 they torched our capital after eating the meal Dolly Madison had set. (That’s just rude)

Yet in today’s world, Britian and America are the staunchest of allies and they are the ones who delivered this victory. It is in this light that I suggest that our own regime change this November is imperative. The current administration has damaged our international relations so severely that who can say, had it been a different government, that we would have received the warning.

Make your own list of who you think would warn us and who might just sit by.

But, just like with the British(and Japanese and Germans and. . .) these relationships can be repaired- starting with this November. It’s time to send a message to the world that we are through being blundering bullies who start war out of political desire (Iraq) rather than national security needs(Afghanistan).

(See Richard Clark’s book Against All Enemies and http://www.newamericancentury.org/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf )

We are a great country, but to go it alone unnecessarily is wasteful and wrongheaded. The British didn't get this information by destroying civil rights of their citizens and there is nothing to suggest that any of our recent desecrations of the founding fathers' designs aided in capturing these animals. When we throw out our civil liberties in the hopes that we might gain some security we of course invoke Franklin's great quote about essential liberties and temporary security. But more than this: At a fundamental level we're announcing that we're just not smart enough to win by our own rules.

The war on terror ultimately will be won by superior technology, superior information and

From now on, if you use there internet service, anything you do is considered to be there’s as part of their business records. Anything.

“AT&T plans to adopt a new privacy policy that requires Internet customers to consent to it’s ownership of their account information and authorizes it to track consumer usage, including their use of video.” Elliot Blair Smith USA As such, AT&T may disclose such records to protect its legitimate business interests.” (IBID)

Now the initial reaction from most people is, “Who cares, I’m not doing anything illegal.” OK fair enough, but consider this.

AT&T COULD, if it chose to, provide information to a health insurance company or employer about your website visits to Alcoholics Anonymous or a colon cancer website.

  Oh they’d NEVER do that!

But they COULD. It’s not protected medical information, so according to the AT&T policy, it’s fair game.

Think about what a great resource this will be to employers. An applicant has their resume on your desk. AT&T CAN sell your last two years surfing habits, web sites visited, chat logs I would imagine, downloads. This is a fantastic ability to slip inside the mind of a new hire and find out BEFORE you’ve obligated yourself to the hire, just what sort of person you’re getting.

It’s the ultimate get to know you.

Health insurance providers could deny new policies based on information gleaned from web searches. Sir why did you spend so much time on the AA online?

Now AT&T will deny the intention to do such a thing, but the truth of the matter is that they reserve the right to. “To protect legitimate business interests.” Well, the obligation to the shareholders is the ultimate legitimate business interest, overriding all others and to that end profitability is king. If there is shareholder value increase to be had by legally selling your information- they’ll do it. In fact they will consider themselves obligated to do it.

While this government happily decimates our right to privacy, they distract us with divisive issues about gay marriage and flag burning.

The next great amendment to the Constitution should be neither of these but a guarantee that my information is MY information and that IF I am doing something illegal, the law enforcement agencies of this country have a right to ask a judge for a warrant to investigate my private communications. If they find information that a law has been broken, they have the obligation to arrest me and I have the right to a speedy trial by a jury of my peers with representation by legal counsel.

  What a novel idea.

Intellectual Honesty and the Internet

I recently received an email from a co-worker. In it- there were numerous quotes from the founding fathers in support of a theocracy.

As an example James Madison is purported to have said:

We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

Great quote, problem is it's manufacturered or inproperly attributed. James Madison is on record numerous times for separation of church and state.

http://web.archive.org/web/20020215050032/http://www.au.org/churchstate/cs3014.htm

It is hard to chose which quote to throw in here, but perhaps this will suffice:

The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries.

I responded that the attributed quotes were made up by someone for their own reasons. One might presume to persuade the weak minded that, while our forefathers and framers of our nation worked diligently to separate the power of the government from the power of the church, they in fact meant the exact opposite the whole time and we're just figuring this out.

My co-worker is angry with me. (no I didn't include the part about weakmindedness.) She says that she is a devout Christian and is not afraid to stand up as such. Also that she does not have the time to verify every email she passes on.

This has left me confused. Is it being a good Christian to pass on ever scrap of pro-God material I can find even if it's a pure fabrication? I thought Number nine of the ten commandments forbids us from bearing false witness.

Wouldn't it be best to talk of God in truths? To celebrate a belief in terms of reality rather than wishful fantasy. Is it so impossible in this age of polarity and partisanism to accept that nothing is gained by forwarding falsehoods even if they support our cause? Are we so weak in our positions that we have to bend a scrape from the barrel of untruth to support our belief in God and Christ?

I would say not. I would say that I could post something positive and truthful about Christ's message every day for the rest of my life and Never come close to exhausting the possibilities.

Buts thats just me.

Haiti Mission Trip Part VII

The Wait & Reflection

As we settle in for the night, we experience our first rain on the trip. The storm is a violent affair with lightening and driving rain. During one of the lulls, we hear a shotgun blast right outside the compound walls. At first we think it’s the transformer again, though the man with the pole had taken care of that possibility a few days ago.

I sit and listen. There is always an energy during emergencies: shouting or movement. There are two dogs in the compound and I wait to hear their barking. I strain my ears but I cannot hear anything. No one is seeking help for a gunshot wound, and no one is trying to enter the compound. I continue to sit in the darkness of that hour, with the storm around me, and use a mini-flashlight so as not to attract any attention as I flip through a small picture album of my family.

Our lead physician had joked earlier in the trip that should kidnappers show up, he had brought his checkbook. I start to think I should have brought a few blank checks of my own.

Morning arrives without incident or explanation of the events of the night before. The storm has knocked the dust down quite a bit for which we are thankful. We leave Living Hope Mission and Haiti around <st1:time hour="12" minute="0">midday</st1:time>.

So my trip has ended and the question remains: Why Haiti?

It comes as no surprise that the question no longer matters. The real question is: Will I return?

There is a terrible truth that must be faced. It’s the part of the story of the young man and the many starfish that they don’t tell you: Sooner or later you are going to have to leave the beach. Whether it is because of hunger or exposure or fatigue, you will have to lay down the burden and leave. The thousands left will look at you, and you will think: Why not one more? In that moment you must decide if you are a one-time visitor or an active participant. Will you return or not?

I believe that I will return to Haiti because it is no longer a place on a map to me, but a place where remarkable people I have come to value live. Wilbert and Meg Merzilius can leave anytime they wish, both are U.S. citizens. They could get on a plane today, but they stay as they have for the past 14 years working to better the lives of those around them.

I will return because Pastor Marius won’t leave. He will awake today, just as he has for every day this past year, knowing that the man who shot him lives only a few doors away. He knows this, but he continues to preach and build his ministry and riding his motorcycle on the dusty and sometimes muddy roads that span the many miles between his churches.

I will return to see my friend Pastor Julio and share in his laugh and smile.

I will return because being a physician is about service and not about privilege.

I will return because of Marlie and My Love.

I will return because I can.

Haiti Mission Trip Part VI

Days Five & Six: The Weekend

The weekend is a bit of a loss from a medical standpoint. Sunday is church day in the highly Christian society, and Saturday is a day to get ready for Sunday. Wilbert had arranged for us to go to one of the resort beaches in Haiti. While that must sound like an extreme oxymoron, the island offers some gorgeous beaches and the one we are to visit is called The Cormier.

UN personnel relax here along with people on religious and medical missions. We are told that the beach was 15 to 20 minutes away. I am sure that’s accurate in "Haiti Time," though in "New York Time" that means more like an hour and a half.

What has impaled this trip in my memory banks–not embedded, not anchored, not etched, but impaled–is the fact that we had to travel over a mountain, while standing in the back of a dump truck with no sides, to get to the beach. I found myself looking from the side of the truck as we inched closer and closer to the edge of the road and the several hundred foot drop. I begin planning how I would get out of the truck in case of a rollover.

Our hosts want us to have a relaxing time and for us to recharge our batteries for the next set of clinics. The beach, I must admit, is stunning, and that’s coming from a Hamptonite. The fact that we had to cross that same mountain again to return home somewhat diluted the restorative powers of the Haitian waters.

Having survived Saturday, we attended church in Borde with Pastor Marius. Aware of the wounds he received, I stood amazed as he preached with unbridled passion to his flock. He is wearing a suit in 100-degree weather and giving a sermon that must have been as much of a workout as one leg of a ironman triathlon. I half expected him to collapse at the rate he was going, but he did not.

On Monday we visited the Cap Haitian Clinic. Pastor Julio, who had volunteered for the first two days of our trip, is now in his fifth day of translating. Lindsey, our pediatric team nurse, Pastor Julio and I experience one of those rare times when you meet someone you bond with from the first encounter. I was thrilled to have him translating again.

The clinic is swamped. As with all our visits, we did our best to see and treat everyone. Once again, the sick children piled in. Perhaps the sickest child is a young girl named Marlie, who has a severe heart murmur. She complained of symptoms whenever she played with other children. Her health remains uncertain.

The day ends and we hand over our remaining medical supplies to the nurse at the clinic, Madam Kesnel, and return to the compound. Tomorrow will be our last day in Haiti and the thought of seeing my wife and daughters again has me wishing the clock hands around the face at light speed.

Haiti Mission Trip Part V

Day Four: Borde

Day four breaks and our team is ready. If nothing else, Borde is closer which means less time on the spleen-rupturing roads. We ready ourselves to run a clinic at another church. This one is run by another of Haiti’s amazing Pastors, Pastor Marius.

Pastor Marius has an incredible story. This young man works with two churches, the one in Borde and another in Cap Haitian. He travels via motorcycle, the best mode of transportation over these roads. He is by any Haitian measure a successful man and someone genuine in his faith. However, not everyone celebrates the success of their neighbor, even if he is a pastor.

On Carnivale Night in 2005, Pastor Marius’ car broke down. He sent his wife and five children home and began working on his car. As he did, he was shot in the back at close range by a man he knew, a neighbor. The reasons are unclear. The bullet sliced through Pastor Marius’ back, destroying his spleen and puncturing a lung. The damage was immense. It should have been a fatal shot.

Pastor Marius lay there on the ground, presumed dead for some hours before anyone missed him. On finding him, deep in shock and laying in a pond of his own blood, his family contacted Wilbert who quickly found a surgeon who came back to Haiti for Carnivale. They operated and though he had a small chance at survival, this man of faith pulled through. He still requires additional surgery for which they have spent a year trying to arrange his passage to the United States.

Pastor Marius still lives in the same neighborhood with his family, as does the gunman. The police were not interested in pursuing the matter.

It was a particularly humbling to be visiting this man’s church to conduct a clinic. We set up quickly after seeing the number of patients. The sickest is a patient seen by our obstetrician. The patient was in the middle of a "septic miscarriage," in which the uterus is severely infected. It can easily be fatal for the mother. We arrange for her to be brought to a rudimentary hospital in Milot, a nearby city. Though minimally equipped, the hospital offers more than we have at Borde. The patients at Borde are very sick, though we did not understand why. On a brighter note, the school associated with the church asks us to give checkups to the students, so we are able to see some healthy children.

One the ride home we stop in Milot to visit an historic site. We are not welcomed by the people in the street, and I cannot help but think twice about our decision to come here.<s></s>

A frustrating thing happens as we head back through the town. We see the young woman from the clinic suffering from the septic miscarriage walking home. They refused to do the necessary procedure and, instead, had given her some antibiotics and sent her on her way. At home, as doctors, we would have lit up the staff of our hospital for such a thing, but here we held no authority. I do not know if she survived.

We make it back to the compound and settle in for the night. It is around <st1:time hour="20" minute="0">8 p.m.</st1:time> when we hear an enormous popping sound, almost an explosion and the lights dim for a moment. Things remain a little tense until we discover what happened. It turns out that a man was trying to throw a metal pole with a hook over the power lines and steal electricity. While he was unsuccessful, he did manage to destroy the transformer outside the compound, so that was the end of our government-supplied power. While electricity was only available every other night, it was still nice to have the ceiling fan going to move some air around. Once the mission generator went off at <st1:time hour="9" minute="30">9:30</st1:time> each night, there would be no more power.

Lacking remorse, the man waves at us, smiles and walks away, leaving his pole behind.

Haiti Mission Trip Part III

Day Two: "My Love" of Juchereau

I suppose if this were a novel, I could tell you that I couldn’t sleep all night from the excitement of helping the poor of Haiti. I would also be lying. I fell asleep almost immediately as we started our trip the day before at <st1:time hour="2" minute="0">2 a.m.</st1:time> in Lima, Ohio, and did not arrive in Cap Haitian until <st1:time hour="18" minute="0">6 p.m.</st1:time>

I slept through the drums, roosters, mosquitoes and pretty much everything else. I didn’t feel rested, but I felt functional. Fortunately, our hosts understand the American need for caffeine as we had access to coffee. After a light meal, we load a pickup recently donated by a group in Texas and a van. Room was tight so I volunteer to sit in the back of the pickup.

My lungs and I are still not on speaking terms.

The roads are mostly washed out and when I use the term moguls, trust me that I am not kidding. First gear is the best friend of the drivers here.

We travel some two and a half hours and arrive at a small church in a place called Juchereau. The church is of stone construction with a metal roof, but it in no way seemed meager as we settle in. The first step leading to the church was quite high as the rainy season had washed away much of the soil from the area.

Our "waiting room" is a shady area on the side of the church and several pews that needed to be moved to make way for our clinic were carried outside to allow people to sit down as the temperature rose to well above 90 degrees. We set about seeing patients and it wasn’t long before "it" happened.

You can always identify a sick child, a dying child. They are unnaturally quiet; they lay in their mothers’ arms without interest in the world. Anyone in health care who has ever seen a child die will tell you that a screaming child doesn’t worry them. A quiet one scares them the most.

The young woman with a deathly quiet child sits down in the chair with an infant we judge to be a few weeks old, a month at most. The young woman is not her mother, but her aunt. The child’s mother had died three or four months before of an unknown wasting disease after long bouts of terrible diarrhea. It didn’t take much more of a description to know that she had died of AIDS. Before she did, she named her child "My Love." The aunt had tried everything to nurse the child, but the child was failing.

I take a deep breath as I begin my examination of My Love. Part of me thinks, "I’m trapped in a poorly written Hallmark special. The name just put it over the top." The infant was impeccably dressed, as are all the Haitians who would visit our clinics. After our interpreter, Julio, translates a few more of our questions it becomes evident that the child is suffering from the virus, too.

How do you tell someone what you know to be true? My Love will die soon. One morning she will wake up, perhaps with a cough and fever or that diarrhea that runs epidemic in the children of Haiti from the parasites in the water, and her condition will worsen throughout the day. My Love will not cry, nor will she struggle for she is already too weak. With perhaps no more than a whimper, the infection will overwhelm the remnants of her immune system and My Love will become one more of the faceless masses to die in the AIDS epidemic. (As you read this, that day may have already passed. I do not know her condition as information reaches us very slowly.)

Every person on our team has the same thought: "Take her home to the United States, bring her to the experts, and let our medical system have a shot at saving this child." Some will say that for the hundreds of thousands of dollars one could invest in a fight that will likely be lost, you could start an immunization program through USAID and save hundreds of children. While I know in the logical side of my brain that it is true and good math, it held no sway as I cradled this child. It was her eyes that I will remember the most. Her eyes were not dim or dull but rather drank in everything around her. They were curious eyes, those that belonged to any four-month-old. Those eyes will stay with me.

We were quiet at lunch as the weight of the encounter stayed with us. We talk of it throughout the remainder of our trip, and as our experience in Haiti grew, so did our understanding of how common such things are.

I don’t know how many patients we saw that day. We did our best. Our interpreter, Pastor Julio, was amazing. He never fatigued. I’m pretty sure he could run the Boston and New York marathons back-to-back and still have energy to spare. I would learn later, while I lay in my bed exhausted, that Pastor Julio went back to his church and preached for three hours.

We drove back home and, after another two and a half hours on the road, I’m certain that there were more potholes than there were heading out. We sit down for a meal and I find more coffee. I retire to my bed to write down some thoughts and think about the day. We are returning to Juchereau in the morning, and after the first day there, I could not help but wonder why I had ever left the states. Though no one is looking forward to the ride out there again, it is far too dangerous to sleep there.

My thoughts return to My Love and I cannot help but think of my youngest daughter, who is near the same age. In another life they could have been playmates. Sleep comes and I miss my second night of voodoo drums

Haiti Mission Trip Part II

Day One: February 21

Our flights to reach Haiti are like decompression from civilization as we know it. The first leg of our journey involved interstates, large terminals and jet engines. We fly from Dayton to Atlanta and have to kill some time during a brief layover. I score some coffee and a magazine to pass the time. It seems a small thing to have coffee, flavored if you like, or the ability to select from nine kinds of tea. It’s something that I will later learn to appreciate a whole lot more.

The second leg brought us from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale where things began to look a little different. No, Florida hasn’t changed, but as we walk toward the flights that service Haiti, we see the airlines are smaller. One of the nurses remarks that she sees "Bob’s Discount Air" and "We-Be Flyin" off in the distance. I’m not entirely sure if she is joking.

The plane that took us to Haiti was tiny. It barely fit our team of 12, one other passenger and another pilot. He sat in the back and I took comfort knowing that our plane has a spare pilot. One other observation about the flight: You never appreciate the safety instructions that they give before you take off until you cannot understand them. The only thing I understood was something about a water landing and that most sharks are not man-eaters. I think.

After two and half hours, we are approaching our destination. As we came in over the mountains I was taken by the beauty of the land from afar: lush, rolling mountains in multiple shades of green surrounded by an inviting blue ocean. As we draw closer to Cap Haitian, we see areas of deforestation. Depending on which way you look, you either see ecological devastation or a Caribbean paradise. It was sobering to see smoke near the runway as we came in for landing.

We are greeted by the Haitian heat. I think of the moment in the Tom Hanks film "Volunteers" when he walks out of his jungle hut and proclaims that they must be about a mile from the sun. We are a source of some interest to the locals, though I soon gather that we aren’t a novelty. The check-in station–a tall plywood box cobbled together by a distracted carpenter–proclaims "Missionary Flights International." Really.

Our experience at immigration and customs was the first confirmation that we are in a different world. Fortunately, we have a contact in Cap Haitian, a man named Wilbert (pronounced- Will-bear) Merzilius. Wilbert runs the Living Hope Mission, a non-denominational group, that helps the people of Cap Haitian and surrounding areas. Wilbert meets us at customs and thank goodness he does.

Four of us–Wilbert, our lead doctor, myself and a dour-looking Haitian who I assume was in charge of customs, all file into an office. As we did, the customs officials outside tear into our six carefully packed boxes of medications. These boxes are tightly packed, and I cannot help but wonder how we are going to repackage our supplies.

Back inside the office, the customs agent offers a rapid-fire speech in Creole and starts punching numbers into an old adding machine. After arriving at the right number, guided by “strict” tariff fees, he shares the figure with our host and guide. Wilbert then leans over the man’s desk, clears the machine and starts inputting his own numbers. This goes on for some time until a deal is made. All told, it cost us two hundred American dollars and a bottle of our hand sanitizer, with moisturizer, to clear customs.

I will not be able to forget the first time I left the terminal. Americans have a much different definition of poverty. A homeless person living in the United States has access to more resources than most of the people we will encounter. In America, you can visit a mission for food and clothing, or an emergency shelter when it gets too cold for a steam grate. What Haitians define as "normal," I would soon learn, is far below the concept of poverty in America.

No one, for example, has access to our version of a bathroom in the areas we visited because there is no sewer system. There are two kinds of outdoor bathrooms–a hole in the ground without walls or a pile of garbage. Public electricity, when it works, is available a few times a week. The roads resemble a motocross track designed by a sadist. The list goes on.

I also find myself bewildered by the Haitians themselves. Haiti is a land of desperate poverty and absolute want, but it is populated by people filled with an illogical and beautiful sort of grace. I do not claim to understand Haiti completely, partially, or even at all, but I believe there is something to be gained by sharing this experience.

We spend the night getting to know our new hosts, Wilbert and his wife, Meg, a native of Ohio who has lived in Haiti for 14 years. We begin preparing our pharmacy. We spend a long time placing de-worming medicines and Flintstones chewable vitamins in plastic baggies. I wonder if we are making too many bags. By the end of the week, I would have increased he number tenfold.

We are acquainted with the voodoo drums and, soon thereafter, the "rooster brigade," the latter of which does not understand that <st1:time hour="3" minute="0">3 a.m.</st1:time> is not the optimal time to start crowing. We soon get acquainted with the Haitian uber-mosquitoes for which DEET is not so much of a repellent as it is an appetizer before their meal of American red blood cells.

Haiti Mission Trip Part I

Late January 2006: A Month Before Departure

Why Haiti? It is a question frequently asked as word gets out that I’ve signed up for a medical mission to Cap Haitian, Haiti. Elections are upcoming and violence is escalating. Many point out that there are kidnappings; I am aware of this fact, and don’t add that there are some 30 a day. I am comforted somewhat by the fact that there is a 5,000-foot mountain range between my group and Port-au-Prince. At 200-plus pounds, I’m a fair amount of person to lug over a 5,000-foot anything, and I’m hopeful that the kidnappers are lazy.

My team will stage in an area called Cap Haitian, in northern Haiti. In addition to "Cap," as the locals call it, we will be working in the villages of Borde, Juchereau and anywhere else we are needed. I will be accompanying an internal medicine doctor for adults and an obstetrician. My job is pediatrics and adults secondarily. Our group will also have several nurses to help get the job done.

I was advised not to have any expectations entering this trip, and yet those who have been there cannot help but share their experiences. I am told that a banana tree will likely be our office, and that the locals have no idea how to form a line. There is excitement among team members and unspoken trepidation as was pay attention to the upcoming elections.

So the question remains, why Haiti?

The truth is: I don’t know. I’m going because there is a need. I’m going because my parents taught me that you have to give something back in this world. I’m going because I have a remarkable wife, Shannon, who made it possible. I’m going to Haiti so that my daughters know that being a physician is not about privilege, but rather about service.

I’m aware that visiting Haiti for so short a time with 50 pounds of medical supplies on my back isn’t likely to change a whole lot. And yes, I know the story about the man chucking starfish back into the sea. It goes like this: An old man is walking on a beach littered with countless starfish stranded after a high tide. He sees a younger man busily throwing the starfish back into the water. The older, presumably wiser man tells the younger man that he can’t possibly make a difference amidst the unending numbers. The younger man picks up a starfish and heaves it into the water and replies, "It made a difference for that one."

Emergency doctors have a great ability to figure things out as they go. Perhaps once I get there, I can figure it out.

A Vaccine To Prevent Cervical Cancer!

A day long dreamed of by so many! According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition
370,000 thousand women will be diagnosed this year. About 80% in developed countries. More would be found in developing countries, but screening and detection are very low there. 200,000 thousand women will lose their lives to this disease. if only it were preventable, how many mothers would still be with their children?

The vast majority of Cervical Cancer is caused by certain strains of the Human Papilloma Virus. Now Galaxo-Smith-Klien and Merck have developed a vaccine against HPV and will be bringing to market! What a day!

Or not.

You see The Family Research Council and likeminded groups appear to be mounting opposition to the vaccine.

First blog post and already I've slipped my leash on reality! you must be saying.

Perhaps not: You see HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. Like any other vaccine in order for it to work, you have to take it before you get infected. FRC believes that immunizing young women against an STD sends the message that it's OK to have sex before marriage. Therefore:

Ix-Nay on the Ure-Cay

I find this line of reasoning a bit perplexing. I allowed my daughters to be vaccinated for Hep B at birth, another disease that can be spread through sexual contact, am I encouraging them to be promiscuous?

I fully expect that a religious conservative organization would discourage teenage intercourse. As a health professional, I know that early intercourse is linked to a myriad of problems, some deadly. We part company when it comes down to denying a potentially life saving vaccine on the possibility, that it might send the wrong signal.

About half of all teens report some sexual activity and fear of pregnancy is the number one reason those who abstain do so. With puberty starting in the early teens and the average age of marriage in the mid twenties- Average number of sexual partners for men is about 20 and for women is about 6 (ABC Poll). There is a lot of opportunity for problems.

Will abstinence prevent this? it sure will, but even the best of people with the best of intentions sometimes falter. Isn't that why we're offered forgiveness?

I fully expect that FRC and others will continue to offer abstinence as the solution, however until they can figure out a way that it can be 100% implemented, could we at least prevent a little cancer?

I wonder: Perhaps the message is- If you both didn't save yourself for marriage- you deserve the cancer.

Hello

A good friend of mine recently inspired me to Blog. If you don't like what I have to say, take it up with him.

I doubt that this blog will last too long. Personal rants are rarely interesting even to the ranter after a few days. Steam disappates when vented. Still, there is something inportant about contributing to the national and international dialogue. Vented properly, steam can drive an engine and that can get you places.

My perspective is from ground zero of social ills and human foibles, the results of which come though the doors of our workplace.
